Carbon, communication, consumers and the continuation of the Courtauld
Commitment were the talk of the day at IGD's Sustainable Packaging 2008
conference, where leading retailers, manufacturers and opinion formers were
aligned in assessing the greatest challenges around sustainable packaging for
industry.
Nestle Waters North America President and CEO Kim Jeffery said that the business will be expecting its suppliers to pursue sustainability initiatives going forward.
A project is underway to create a new, quick, environmentally-friendly packaging
process. It focuses on improving the 'form-fill and seal' type of packaging
which is used for foods such as pasta, rice and crisps.
Asda has announced that by the end of 2010, it intends to eliminate all construction waste sent to landfill from its store development programme. The move by Asda is expected to save approximately 12,000 tonnes of landfill waste annually.
Wal-Mart has announced its first substantial purchase of wind energy in the
US. The wind power will supply up to 15% of Wal-Mart's total energy for
around 360 stores and other facilities in Texas.
Wal-Mart has held a meeting with over 1,000 of its top
suppliers, Chinese officials and non-governmental organizations in Beijing to
promote a set of new regulations and best practices.
At IGD’s recent Supply Chain Summit, ‘Delivering in Turbulent Times’, ECR
(Efficient Consumer Response) unveiled the final two elements of its innovative
Sustainable Distribution Toolkit.
The Co-operative Group is to invest £1m in improving both storage and processing capacity for data following last year's merger between the Group and United Co-operatives.
UK logistics firm Wincanton has announced a merger of its UK chilled supply
chain operation with rival operator Culina Logistics. The tie-up will
start from 28 March 2009, and will create an enlarged group with an annual
turnover of £205m.
